India–Switzerland Mobility & Migration Pact Takes Effect, Launching 5-Year Multi-Entry Visas and Young Professionals Scheme
Switzerland’s new Migration and Mobility Partnership (MMP) with India formally entered into force on 12 October 2026 after both governments completed their final notifications in Bern and New Delhi last week. The agreement, signed during Swiss President Guy Parmelin’s state visit on 5 October, creates a broad legal framework for the lawful movement of students, researchers and skilled workers between the two countries while committing both sides to closer cooperation against irregular migration and trafficking. Under the MMP, eligible Indian nationals may apply for multi-entry ‘Mobility Visas’ valid for up to five years, allowing stays of up to six months per visit for business, research, study or family purposes. Visa holders remain subject to Swiss work-permit and registration rules but will benefit from a simplified application package that recognises Indian police-clearance certificates and accepts biometric data already captured for other Schengen visas. Indian students enrolling at Swiss higher-education institutions will, for the first time, be able to obtain renewable one-year residence permits tied to the academic calendar, reducing the need for repeat applications each semester. A stand-alone Agreement on the Exchange of Young Professionals (YPS) also commenced on 12 October. It opens 300 quota-controlled places (expandable to 500) for citizens aged 18-35 to take up 12-month work placements in their field of study or training. Swiss host companies must pay prevailing local wages and provide a mentoring plan; participants are exempt from labour-market tests but may not convert to long-term status. The Swiss State Secretariat for Migration (SEM) will publish the first YPS application window in mid-November, with placements starting as early as January 2027. For Swiss employers, the twin accords offer a more predictable pipeline of English-speaking IT, life-science and engineering talent at a time when domestic skills shortages persist. Universities anticipate a rise in Indian enrolments for master’s programmes that feed directly into the R-&D workforce clustered around Zurich, Basel and Lausanne. Mobility managers should nevertheless note that overall third-country quotas remain unchanged; companies must still document recruitment efforts within Switzerland and the EU/EFTA before applying for regular work permits. Practical take-aways: • Mobility-visa applicants must lodge files at VFS Global centres but will receive priority interview slots; processing targets are 15 calendar days. • YPS candidates require a Swiss employment contract and proof of accommodation before SEM issues the approval letter that triggers a D-visa. • Dependants are not covered under YPS and must apply separately. • The new visas do not override Schengen 90/180-day limits for onward travel in other member states. While the agreements are bilateral, they dovetail with the broader EFTA–India Trade and Economic Partnership (TEPA) that entered into force in 2025 and with Switzerland’s strategy of diversifying talent inflows beyond the EU. Corporate mobility teams should update policy handbooks immediately and coordinate with Indian sending entities to secure quota places before they are exhausted.
