IOM in Geneva confirms 139 dead after migrant boat capsizes off Djibouti
The International Organization for Migration (IOM) headquarters in Geneva reported on Sunday, 11 October 2026, that at least 139 migrants – many of them children – drowned when an overloaded vessel making the Red Sea crossing from Djibouti to Yemen sank soon after departure late on 8 October. The U.N. agency said the wooden boat had 305 mainly Ethiopian nationals on board; more than 80 survived and have been transferred to IOM’s Obock rescue centre for medical and psychological assistance. Although the tragedy occurred more than 4,000 kilometres from Switzerland, the response is being coordinated from IOM’s Geneva operations room, underscoring the pivotal role the city plays in global migration governance. Swiss-based humanitarian logisticians are arranging emergency supplies and liaising with Djibouti’s authorities on victim identification – a process made harder because many bodies were buried in unnamed mass graves. The incident highlights the continued popularity—and danger—of the so-called Eastern Route that takes migrants from the Horn of Africa across the Gulf of Aden to Gulf states via Yemen. For European companies managing talent in East Africa and the Middle East, the disaster is a stark reminder of the human risks that drive irregular migration flows and ultimately shape visa-policy debates in Geneva and Brussels. Swiss insurers and multinational firms with regional operations should prepare for stricter due-diligence requirements as donor governments examine transport-route security and step up funding for IOM search-and-rescue programmes. Corporations with humanitarian-leave or corporate-volunteering schemes may also see requests from staff eager to support IOM’s Geneva-led appeal for CHF 8 million to expand reception capacity in Djibouti and Yemen.
