Munich Airport has alerted passengers that, owing to Deutsche Bahn construction work, no direct train services will operate to or from the airport from 11:30 a.m. on Monday 12 October until 5:00 a.m. on Friday 16 October. The suspension affects both S-Bahn lines (S1 and S8) as well as the inter-city Airport-Express (ÜFEX). A substitute bus network (Schienenersatzverkehr) will run between Neufahrn, Ismaning, Freising and the airport, but travellers are advised to allow extra transit time. For business travellers and air-cargo couriers the disruption is significant: around 60 percent of passengers and a sizeable share of just-in-time freight move between the Bavarian capital and the airport by rail. Travel-management teams should update itineraries to include the bus legs or arrange dedicated car or shuttle services. Peak-hour road congestion around the A92 motorway connector is expected to be heavier than usual. Airlines with tight connection windows—Lufthansa, Air Dolomiti and Singapore Airlines among them—have issued waivers allowing free rebooking for passengers who miss flights because of the rail outage. Hotels at the airport’s Hilton complex are extending early-check-in options for travellers arriving on the night bus services. The construction forms part of Deutsche Bahn’s multi-year upgrade of signalling and track along the airport branch lines ahead of the 2028 opening of the second S-Bahn core tunnel in Munich. While the long-term goal is faster and more resilient rail access, mobility managers need to monitor planned closures closely: further overnight or weekend shutdowns are foreseen later in the winter schedule.
