The promise of Huanggang Port’s technology-driven joint inspection system was dramatically illustrated on day one when Mr Leung, an APEC Business Travel Card (ABTC) holder, breezed through both Hong Kong and Shenzhen immigration in less than 60 seconds. Reporters from Wen Wei Po clocked the process as Leung used the dedicated purple e-channel reserved for eligible travellers. His experience underscores how the ABTC, a regional trusted-traveller credential, can be leveraged alongside the port’s cooperative clearance to slash door-to-door journey times for executives who criss-cross the Greater Bay Area. Leung told DotDotNews that he expects to double his weekly Shenzhen trips because “the border is no longer the bottleneck”. Officials confirmed that the e-channels recognise ABTC, Mainland Travel Permits and Hong Kong identity cards through facial recognition and document chip reading. Signage is colour-coded (blue, green, orange, red, purple) to funnel different traveller categories quickly to the right gate, reducing confusion that previously clogged manual counters. With Shenzhen hosting APEC Economic Leaders’ Week next month, authorities have rolled out one-stop service centres, real-time translation kiosks and specialist staff at Huanggang to handle the influx of foreign delegates. Business groups say the port’s performance will be closely watched as a template for upgrading other checkpoints before the World University Games in 2027. For mobility managers, the case study highlights the value of enrolling senior staff in expedited-entry programmes and ensuring they carry multiple valid documents where bilateral arrangements exist. It also signals that digital identity and pre-clearance apps will increasingly define the corporate-travel experience in the Pearl River Delta.
