The Immigration Department updated its homepage on 13 October to confirm that Hong Kong residents can now register for the new “collaborative inspection and joint clearance” automated channels directly inside the HK e-Channel mobile app. The function eliminates the need to queue at enrolment booths and is specifically aimed at frequent cross-border commuters who plan to use the rebuilt Huanggang Port. Travellers aged 18 or above need only scan their Hong Kong ID card, upload a selfie and link their Mainland Travel Permit; approval is typically returned within minutes. Once enrolled, users can breeze through the three-gate lane at Huanggang—clearing both Hong Kong and Shenzhen immigration in a single biometric transaction that averages under 60 seconds, according to government trials. The move is critical as authorities expect the Chung Yeung Festival long weekend to drive daily passenger flows above 150,000. Logistics firms and tech companies with staff shuttling between Hong Kong Science Park and Shenzhen’s Nanshan district are advising employees to enrol immediately to avoid manual-counter bottlenecks. From a systems angle, the app leverages the same encrypted QR token used for contactless e-Channel gates at the airport, ensuring continuity of identity assurance. Data is stored on the user’s device and transmitted only to government servers; no information is shared with commercial partners. HR teams should update travel SOPs and remind Mainland-based assignees that Hong Kong facial-recognition standards differ from Shenzhen’s older fingerprint-only kiosks. The initiative underscores Hong Kong’s strategy to move 80 percent of all land-border passengers onto self-service clearance by 2027, freeing officers for risk-based inspections and aligning with the city’s aspiration to be a smart-mobility hub.
