Cyprus completes technical work for Schengen accession
Cyprus has quietly reached a milestone it has chased for more than a decade: the completion of all technical requirements for joining the European Union’s passport-free Schengen area. Presidential Press Office director Victoras Papadopoulos told state radio that ministries ranging from Interior to Justice have now passed the EU’s demanding evaluations on border management, data protection, visa issuance, police co-operation and use of the shared Schengen Information System. With the laboratories, databases and airport e-gates now certified, Nicosia’s task shifts from engineers and IT specialists to the diplomats who must convince every existing Schengen member to give a unanimous “yes.” President Nikos Christodoulides has already briefed European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on the progress and has asked for the dossier to be tabled at the Justice and Home Affairs Council in December. For Cypriot businesses the change would be profound. Once political approval is secured, Cypriot nationals and legal residents will be able to move across the vast majority of EU internal borders without showing a passport, simplifying everything from executive travel to cross-border trucking. Airlines and tour operators also expect cost savings once duplication of border checks at Schengen airports disappears. However, Papadopoulos warned that the remaining hurdles are “political, not technical.” Some member states continue to link Cyprus’ application to wider discussions on migration burden-sharing and relations with Turkey. Diplomats in Nicosia say they are lobbying intensively in Berlin, Paris and The Hague to avoid a repeat of 2022, when Bulgaria and Romania saw their own bids vetoed despite clean technical reports. If Cyprus secures the green light, the country would spend roughly 12 months phasing out internal border controls while upgrading its external sea- and airports to full Schengen standards. That timetable points to practical changes at Larnaca and Paphos airports during 2027 — close enough that companies should begin scenario-planning now for Schengen-era travel and compliance.
