International Experience Canada (IEC) – Ottawa’s youth-mobility program that issues open and employer-specific work permits to citizens of 36 partner economies – is about to close its 2026 season. Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has fixed 9 a.m. Eastern Time on Monday, 19 October 2026 as the cut-off for submitting new IEC profiles. Any candidate who is not already in a pool before the bell rings will have to wait for the 2027 season to open early next year. The deadline applies to all three IEC categories: Working Holiday, Young Professionals and International Co-op. It affects only the creation of profiles; candidates who already have an Invitation to Apply (ITA) – or who receive one in the final round that IRCC says will run later this week – can still submit the full work-permit application on the usual 20-day timeline. Likewise, participants whose permits have already been approved remain free to enter Canada on the validity dates shown. For employers, mobility teams and relocation planners the last-minute rush matters because IEC is the fastest, simplest avenue to bring in young talent with study or trainee backgrounds. Profiles take minutes to file and require no Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) or employer compliance fee until after an ITA is issued. Businesses that miss today’s deadline will have to consider back-up options such as LMIA-supported closed permits, provincial nominee pathways or the upcoming 2027 IEC season. Historically, IRCC closes the pools when inventory and quota levels converge. Government statistics show that as of 13 October, fewer than 3 % of remaining spots were unallocated across most partner countries, so today’s hard stop is not a surprise. Even with the surge in late-season profiles, IRCC’s on-time processing record for IEC work permits remains strong: 91 % have been issued within the 56-day service standard this year. Practically, global-mobility managers should double-check that any last-minute candidates have passports valid for at least two years, digital copies of biometrics appointments and – if targeting the employer-specific streams – signed job offers that meet wage and skill requirements. Profiles can be withdrawn and re-submitted until the deadline, but once the portal closes, no edits are possible.
