After months offline, IRCC’s Application Status Tracker – the online tool that lets applicants see which parts of their file have moved – is back in service. The relaunched platform, updated 19 October, now supports sponsorship, Express Entry, study permits, work permits and visitor visas. Applicants log in with GCKey or a Sign-In Partner to view section-level labels such as “eligibility in progress” or “biometrics completed,” offering a granularity long demanded by immigration lawyers and HR teams. Why does it matter? Under Canada’s privacy legislation, IRCC call-centre agents cannot share detailed status steps. That has forced employers to make travel and project plans in the dark, or to file Access-to-Information requests that can themselves take months. The restored tracker provides daily data refreshes, reducing speculative update emails and giving mobility managers a clearer read on risk. Coverage remains partial: an application must already have an acknowledgement of receipt (AOR) before it can be tracked, and paper-based Provincial Nominee and Quebec streams are not yet included. Still, the tool marks another step in IRCC’s Digital Platform Modernisation strategy, which aims to migrate all lines of business off the ageing Global Case Management System by 2028. Employers should encourage foreign workers and accompanying family members to create personal GCKey accounts and review status regularly. A “waiting on you” flag signals the department needs additional documents; missing that message can stall a file for weeks. Representatives can be added, but only with the applicant’s written consent, so HR teams may need to adjust onboarding checklists. The tracker’s return also reduces reliance on third-party fee-based portals that scrape IRCC data. That, in turn, alleviates security concerns around credential sharing. For business-immigration practitioners, the tool is now once again a primary diagnostic to decide when to escalate via webform, MP enquiry or – in rare cases – mandamus litigation.
