Dubai’s AI-Powered ‘Red Carpet’ Corridor Wins Dubai-it Award for World’s Fastest Passport Control
Dubai has added another superlative to its aviation résumé. On October 20 the Government of Dubai announced that the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA) had won the inaugural Dubai-it Award for Projects in Government for its “Red-Carpet Travel Corridor” at Dubai International Airport’s Terminal 3. The corridor uses a mesh of AI-driven facial, iris and gait recognition cameras to verify up to ten travellers simultaneously, allowing them to clear passport control in under five seconds without presenting a travel document or boarding pass. The system was trial-launched in late-2025 for premium-class passengers and crews but is now being expanded to diplomatic, Golden-Visa and corporate fast-track lanes. GDRFA says average throughput has jumped ten-fold compared with conventional e-gates, while customer-satisfaction surveys show a 99 per cent approval rating. The contact-less design also reduces surface-transmission health risks and saves approximately 12 million printed passport stickers every year. Beyond speed and hygiene, officials stress the strategic value for Dubai’s economy. Shorter queues free up airport capacity at peak times, supporting the emirate’s target of handling 115 million passengers by 2030 and underpinning its pitch as a hub for multinational headquarters. Travel-data provider ForwardKeys estimates that every additional minute saved at border control increases a transfer passenger’s propensity to spend in the duty-free area by 1.3 per cent – adding tens of millions of dirhams to non-aeronautical revenue annually. For global-mobility managers, the corridor signals a future in which physical passports could play a secondary role on high-volume routes. Dubai’s next step is to negotiate mutual-recognition agreements so that departing travellers can enjoy equally frictionless arrival at partner airports such as Singapore Changi and Amsterdam Schiphol. Companies moving staff through DXB should therefore review their data-privacy policies and ensure that employee consent covers biometric processing in multiple jurisdictions. The Crown Prince of Dubai, Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed, summed up the ambition: “We want world-class travel clearance to be measured in seconds, not minutes.” With the Red-Carpet Corridor, that vision is already on the ground – and in the air.
