China records 192 million cross-border trips in Q3; visa-free arrivals up 24 percent
China’s National Immigration Administration (NIA) released its third-quarter border statistics on 20 October, confirming that international mobility to and from the mainland has not only normalised but is gathering pace. Immigration officers processed 192 million entries and exits between July and September, a 7.9 percent year-on-year increase. The most eye-catching figure was the 15.6 percent jump in foreign nationals entering China, reaching 11.60 million. Of these, 8.99 million—almost four in every five visitors—entered under one of China’s growing array of visa-free, visa-waiver or transit-without-visa schemes, representing a 24.1 percent surge on the same period in 2025. The data underscore how Beijing’s post-pandemic opening strategy—anchored by unilateral 30-day visa-free stays for 50 countries, expanded transit-without-visa coverage and mutual visa-exemption pacts with a further 24 nations—is translating into tangible traffic. Russia, South Korea, Vietnam, Malaysia and the United States topped the inbound league table, collectively accounting for almost two-thirds of foreign arrivals. On the outbound side, Hong Kong, Macau and Korea remained the most popular destinations for mainland travellers, but Thailand and Vietnam have returned to the top ten as corporate events and incentive travel resume. For global mobility managers, the figures confirm that business-critical travel corridors with China are functioning at scale again. Procurement teams can expect shorter lead-times for entry approvals, and assignees arriving on visa-free privileges should nevertheless register their accommodation promptly—something that can now be done online nationwide. Multinationals should also note that the 899,000 foreign travellers who arrived visa-free were concentrated in just ten source markets; companies recruiting from outside those markets may still face longer visa lead-times. Border authorities simultaneously reported a leap in throughput efficiency: 1.095 million aircraft, ships, trains and vehicles were inspected in Q3, up 10.6 percent. NIA’s 12367 hotline handled more than two million multilingual queries with a 99 percent satisfaction rating, reflecting smoother processes on the ground. That operational resilience bodes well for the winter peak, when China hosts multiple trade fairs and the start of the 2026-27 IATA schedule. Looking ahead, Beijing is expected to publish its 2027–2030 immigration service roadmap before year-end, with rumours of further unilateral visa-free additions. Corporates should monitor announcements closely, as they can materially alter assignment costs and travel-policy compliance within days of publication.
