Irish Work-Permit Queues Shorten as DETE Updates Processing Dates
The Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment (DETE) quietly published a new set of workload figures on 22 October 2026 that will be welcomed by multinational employers struggling to fill key roles in Ireland. According to the update, Critical Skills Employment Permit (CSEP) applications are now being examined for files lodged on 15 October 2026—just one week ago—while new Intra-Company Transfer (ICT) permits have reached 16 October submissions. General Employment Permit (GEP) files are at 18 September, trimming the backlog to roughly five weeks, and renewals across all categories sit at early August. In practical terms, the new dashboard confirms that DETE’s recruitment of additional case-workers earlier this year and the full bedding-in of its 2025 online permits platform are beginning to pay dividends. For companies in pharma, med-tech and global finance that rely on ICT moves to Dublin, a one-week turnaround sharply reduces the risk of project delays and the need for costly interim business-visitor arrangements. Likewise, the quicker CSEP queue will help technology and engineering firms convert job offers to arrivals before competing jurisdictions lure candidates elsewhere. The data also underline where pain points remain. GEPs—typically used for medium-skilled roles such as chefs, logistics supervisors and construction trades—still face more than a month in the queue, while reviews and appeals are stuck back in April, reflecting DETE’s policy of prioritising new hires over contested refusals. Employers should therefore factor a minimum six-month timeline into strategic recruitment plans when a role falls outside the Critical Skills list. Looking ahead, officials have indicated informally that additional automation tools, including AI-driven completeness checks, will be piloted in Q1 2027. Companies are advised to continue submitting fully documented applications and to monitor the DETE website every Thursday, when processing dates are typically refreshed. HR leads should also ensure that foreign staff with permits expiring before February 2027 file renewal requests at least 12 weeks in advance, given that renewal queues still sit in early August. For mobility managers, the message is cautiously optimistic: Ireland’s permit system is moving faster for headline categories, but strategic workforce planning—and close dialogue with DETE—remain essential to avoid assignment slippage.
