India–New Zealand FTA Launches 5,000-Slot Work Visa and Iconic Occupations Pathway
Implementation of the India–New Zealand Free Trade Agreement shifted into operational mode at 00:01 IST on 20 October, and the first full business day—21 October—saw Immigration New Zealand open online forms for two bespoke visas reserved for Indian nationals: the ‘India Skilled Work Visa’ and the ‘India Iconic Work Visa’. Together they provide up to 5,000 three-year work permits at any given time. The Skilled stream targets engineers, IT professionals, healthcare workers and teachers, while the Iconic list ring-fences 600 places for cultural ambassadors such as Indian chefs, classical musicians, yoga instructors and AYUSH practitioners. Employers must be accredited under New Zealand’s AEWV framework and pay at least the median wage (NZ$31.61/hour) unless an exemption applies. For Indian companies delivering projects in Auckland or Wellington, the pathway removes the uncertainty of Labour-Market Tests: once the quota is available, a compliant job offer and supporting documents are enough. However, repeat participation is capped—visa holders must spend three years outside New Zealand before re-applying—so workforce planners should schedule rotational assignments carefully. The services chapter also guarantees entry for short-term business visitors, contractual service suppliers and intra-corporate transferees, mirroring provisions India granted to Kiwi nationals. Law firms say this reciprocity will be crucial once Indian conglomerates start bidding for New Zealand infrastructure deals. Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal predicts bilateral trade could triple to NZ$7 billion by 2030, but mobility experts warn that processing capacity in New Delhi and Mumbai visa centres will be stress-tested in the coming weeks. Applicants are urged to book medicals and police certificates early to avoid bottlenecks.
