Austria to end stationary border posts on 15 June, shift to flexible ‘border-zone’ checks

Austria to end stationary border posts on 15 June, shift to flexible ‘border-zone’ checks
The Interior Ministry has set 15 June 2026 as the date when fixed checkpoints on Austria’s frontiers with Hungary, Slovenia, the Czech Republic and Slovakia will be dismantled. The policy reversal is framed as a response to the EU migration pact, which emphasises controls at external rather than internal borders. Florian Hiegelsberger, general secretary of the Upper Austrian People’s Party (OÖVP), welcomed the move but warned that security gaps must not open. Citing German federal-police data showing 8,508 prevented illegal entries from Austria into Bavaria over the past 12 months, he urged “dynamic surveillance” of motorway on- and off-ramps, rail nodes and cross-border bus routes. The Interior Ministry says it will redeploy personnel to mobile control units equipped with licence-plate readers and drones, mirroring Germany’s strategy, which itself remains in place until mid-September. For logistics firms the shift means fewer mandatory stops at border booths but a greater likelihood of ad-hoc vehicle inspections within 25 kilometres of the frontier. Schengen-area commuters are expected to benefit from reduced congestion on routes such as the A4 eastbound to Hungary and the Pyhrnpass line into the Czech Republic. The ministry will review the efficacy of the new model after three months.
