Scottish fans’ ESTA rejections prompt UK-US talks ahead of World Cup travel rush
With less than two weeks before Scotland’s first World Cup fixture in Boston, dozens of supporters report surprise refusals under the US Electronic System for Travel Authorisation (ESTA). Scottish Secretary Douglas Alexander told Deadline News late on 11 June that the UK Government had convened cross-departmental talks and was liaising with the US Department of Homeland Security to unblock genuine cases. US officials say no new rule changes are behind the spike and that refusals are often linked to historical overstays or incomplete social-media information. Nevertheless, the timing risks travel chaos: some 20,000 “Tartan Army” members are booked on charter flights from 18 June. FCDO guidance urges travellers with rejected ESTAs to seek a full B-type visa appointment, but US consular slots are scarce. While the issue centres on football fans, mobility managers should note the broader lesson: US Customs and Border Protection has tightened algorithmic screening, and seemingly minor discrepancies can trigger a denial. Employers sending staff to the US on Visa Waiver Program trips should double-check that passports, previous travel history and social-media disclosures are in order. For travel teams the practical step is to build contingency time for visa appointments and to monitor carrier ‘no-board’ lists, which airlines must consult before check-in. The Scottish Government is expected to publish supplemental travel advice within 48 hours.
