More than 18 months after Britain made its Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) compulsory for visa-exempt visitors, airlines are still off-loading passengers at the gate for avoidable mistakes. TravelPulse Canada reports that carriers continue to deny boarding to travellers who either fail to obtain an ETA or enter the wrong passport details, despite repeated reminders in booking confirmations and check-in prompts. The ETA—valid for two years and multiple visits—was introduced in February 2025 to tighten pre-travel security checks and pave the way for a fully contactless border by 2027. While most applications are approved within minutes, those selected for manual review can take days, leaving last-minute applicants stranded. iVisa, a technology firm that processes thousands of submissions weekly, says typos, passport renewals and the mistaken belief that children travel on a parent’s ETA top the list of pitfalls. For corporate travel managers the message is clear: build ETA compliance into pre-trip approval workflows and insist that travellers apply at the time of booking, not the night before departure. Companies with high-frequency travellers should maintain a live register of ETA expiry dates to avoid aborted trips and costly re-ticketing. The UK government has indicated it will begin issuing automated fines to carriers who ferry non-authorised passengers from July 2026, increasing the commercial incentive for airlines to take a zero-tolerance approach. Mobility teams should therefore expect stricter gate-checks and factor in possible re-routing delays when developing travel-risk assessments. Looking ahead, the ETA will merge into the wider eVisa ecosystem that already covers resident migrants. This means consistent digital status checks for visitors and residents alike, reinforcing the shift from physical documents to online pre-clearance.
