Nationwide Rail Strike Paralyses Italian Trains and Airport Links, Forcing Travellers to Reroute
Rail services across Italy ground to a halt between 03:00 on 11 June and 02:00 on 12 June after base unions Cub Trasporti and SGB refused to join a last-minute truce accepted by the larger federations. The 23-hour walk-out hit Trenitalia, Italo, Trenord and regional subsidiaries, cancelling hundreds of Intercity and Frecciarossa departures and severing Leonardo Express connections between Rome-Fiumicino airport and Termini station. Although Italian law obliges operators to guarantee minimum services during peak commuter bands (06:00-09:00 and 18:00-21:00), many long-distance trains were simply scrubbed from the timetable, while others were replaced by buses—creating multi-hour journeys for business travellers with tight flight connections. RFI, the rail-infrastructure company, issued real-time alerts warning that residual delays could spill over into Friday morning as rolling stock and crew reposition.

For international companies whose staff still need to move across borders despite transport turmoil, VisaHQ can lighten the administrative load. Its platform helps travellers secure the right Italian visas quickly, offers live status tracking and provides expert guidance—particularly useful when a rail shutdown forces last-minute itinerary changes. The strike is the latest flashpoint in negotiations over a new national collective agreement. Unions accuse the government of fragmenting public tenders into multiple lots, a move they say weakens worker protection and safety standards. Deputy Transport Minister Edoardo Rixi signalled openness to revisiting the tender model during an emergency meeting but failed to avert the protest. Corporate travel managers reacted by switching staff to same-day domestic flights and pooling taxis to Fiumicino and Malpensa, but capacity was tight and fares surged by up to 45 % on key routes, according to Italian GBTA chapter data. Trenitalia reiterated that unused tickets can be refunded in full or re-booked within the next week, yet many SME travellers were unaware of the electronic procedure and queued at station counters instead. Looking ahead, further 24-hour rail stoppages are pencilled in for 27 June and 15 July if talks fail. Firms with rotational assignees or time-sensitive cargo in northern industrial hubs should therefore map alternative road or air options and build force-majeure clauses into supplier contracts.
