Spain kicks off 2026 ‘Operación Paso del Estrecho’ with EU biometric Entry/Exit System
Spain has officially launched the 2026 edition of Operación Paso del Estrecho (OPE), the annual summer operation that channels millions of Maghreb-origin residents in Europe through Spanish ports and land borders on their way to North Africa. From 15 June to 15 September, authorities expect a record 3.5 million passengers and 850,000 vehicles to pass through Algeciras, Tarifa, Motril, Almería and the land borders of Ceuta and Melilla.

For individual holidaymakers and corporate travel coordinators alike, navigating the fresh layers of documentation can be daunting. VisaHQ’s dedicated Spain portal (https://www.visahq.com/spain/) streamlines the process by pre-screening passports, monitoring Schengen-area day counts in light of the new Entry/Exit System, and arranging any supplementary visas or travel authorisations your team may require. Using the service before departure can avert last-minute issues at ferry check-in desks and keep summer itineraries on schedule.

This year’s standout change is the full deployment of the EU’s new Entry/Exit System (EES). All non-EU travelers’ fingerprints and facial images are captured on arrival and departure, replacing manual passport stamps. Spain’s Interior Ministry has installed 160 biometric kiosks and mobile tablets in ports and border posts, backed by 750 extra National Police and Guardia Civil officers. The regulation allows officials to revert to manual stamping for up to six days if queues become unmanageable, and “drive-through” mobile devices have been issued for travelers with reduced mobility so they need not leave their cars. Authorities stress that coordination with Morocco’s police and port operators is “the tightest in a decade.” Police liaison teams are embedded on both sides of the Strait of Gibraltar, and a real-time data link with Morocco’s national coordination centre will flag inadmissible travelers before ferries dock. The Spanish Red Cross has augmented medical teams in port holding areas and installed mist-spray cooling tunnels after last summer’s 42 °C heatwave. For companies moving staff between Europe and North Africa, the biometric roll-out means longer formalities on the first crossing but faster onward trips—once a traveler’s biometric template is stored, subsequent border passages can be cleared in seconds. Logistics firms are advising drivers to allow an extra 30–40 minutes on the Spanish side during the first fortnight while officers and passengers get used to the system. Travel managers should circulate updated guidance: passports must be valid for at least six months; children now require their own biometric enrolment; and ferry check-in desks will refuse boarding to third-country nationals who have exceeded their authorised Schengen stay, as EES calculates allowable days automatically. Failure to comply could lead to immediate refusal of entry and a five-year Schengen alert record. The 2026 OPE is regarded by Brussels as a full-scale stress test ahead of mandatory EES implementation at all EU external borders in October. A smooth Spanish summer will bolster confidence that business travelers can navigate the new digital frontier with minimal disruption.
