India blocks Telegram nationwide until NEET re-test ends
India’s National Testing Agency (NTA) has ordered internet service providers to block the messaging app Telegram from 16 to 22 June after investigators found cheat-sheet sellers using the platform ahead of the NEET (UG) medical entrance re-examination. The directive, issued under Section 69A of the Information Technology Act, also requests that Telegram disable its message-editing feature through the end of the month. Although driven by exam security, the sweeping ban disrupts a communication tool relied upon by more than 150 million users in India—including expatriate employees, international students and business travellers who use Telegram groups for housing leads, airport-pickup coordination and visa-processing alerts.

Digital-nomad and relocation forums lit up within hours, advising newcomers to switch to Signal or WhatsApp until service resumes. Airlines have warned that real-time flight updates sent via Telegram bots will be unavailable this week. Corporate mobility teams should circulate alternative emergency-contact channels to travelling staff and review whether critical workflows (for example, OTP-based log-ins to corporate portals routed through Telegram) need a temporary workaround. Organisations storing client data on the platform should also verify backup accessibility, as the ban may impede data retrieval until access is restored. Telegram CEO Pavel Durov criticised the order as “collective punishment”, while digital-rights groups said blocking an entire service is disproportionate to curbing exam fraud. For now, businesses have little choice but to adapt; courts rarely overturn Section 69A blocks once imposed.
