Amazon-Focused Seminar Explores ‘Decolonising Borders’ and Climate-Driven Migration
The State University of Pará (UEPA) hosted the intercultural seminar ‘Descolonizando Fronteiras: Educação e Mobilidades Humanas na Amazônia’ in Belém on 19 June 2026. Timed to precede World Refugee Day, the event brought together academics, activists and migrant community leaders from Brazil, Venezuela, Haiti, Benin and Mozambique to debate the region’s unique mobility challenges. Morning panels examined how climate change is reshaping displacement patterns along the Amazon basin, citing recent floods that prompted cross-border movements between Peru, Colombia and Brazil. Afternoon sessions showcased grassroots education projects that help indigenous and migrant children maintain bilingual literacy while integrating into Brazilian curricula.

Whether you are a humanitarian worker, a student, or a corporate mobility manager responding to these very challenges, VisaHQ can simplify the nuts and bolts of travel documentation. Its platform (https://www.visahq.com/brazil/) provides real-time Brazilian visa requirements, secure online applications and corporate account management so that individuals and teams can focus on integration and support rather than red tape.

The seminar forms part of UEPA’s partnership with UNHCR’s Sérgio Vieira de Mello Chair, which is drafting policy recommendations for state education departments on recognising foreign school transcripts and issuing student IDs regardless of migration status. Participants called for the federal government to include environmental-migration scenarios in the new National Migration Plan currently under consultation. For multinational employers operating in the North, the discussions highlighted the need for family-support packages that address school placement and language barriers when relocating staff to Pará and Amazonas. CSR teams may find opportunities to sponsor community language hubs or scholarship funds identified during the seminar.
