GOL to Enter Long-Haul Market with Rio–New York Service Starting 8 July
GOL Linhas Aéreas, traditionally a domestic and short-haul carrier, will cross the Atlantic for the first time on 8 July when it opens thrice-weekly Rio de Janeiro/Galeão–New York JFK flights, industry journal Aviation Week reported on 1 July. The service will initially operate with a wet-leased Wamos Air A330-200 before transitioning to GOL’s own A330-900neos later in 2026. The long-haul leap is central to parent company Abra Group’s plan to establish Rio as a second Brazilian hub for intercontinental traffic alongside São Paulo. By connecting directly into Delta’s T4 operation at JFK, GOL will unlock seamless onward codeshares to more than 40 U.S. destinations, giving Brazilian corporates an alternative to LATAM–Delta connections via GRU. From a mobility-management perspective, the new service offers several perks: a true midnight departure from GIG enables full business-day utilisation in Rio, while the return northbound red-eye lands at 06:15, allowing same-day meetings on the U.S. East Coast.

For business travellers eager to take advantage of the new route, ensuring the correct travel documentation is in place is essential. VisaHQ’s platform (https://www.visahq.com/brazil/) simplifies U.S. and Brazilian visa processing with digital applications, concierge support and real-time tracking, making it a handy tool for corporates and individuals planning trans-Atlantic itineraries.

GOL’s SMILES corporate programme will extend elite-status earning on the route, and the carrier confirmed it will honour Delta Sky Club access for premium customers during the wet-lease phase. Challenges remain. GOL pilots are not yet A330-rated, so the airline is accelerating wide-body training with CAE in Montréal. Meanwhile, Brazil’s National Civil Aviation Agency has imposed a six-month performance review that could revoke route rights if punctuality drops below 80 %. Competitors LATAM and American Airlines have already filed for additional slots at JFK, signalling a potential capacity race on the Brazil–U.S. corridor. If successful, GOL says it will add Orlando and Madrid in the northern-winter season. That would give corporate travel buyers unprecedented choice among three Brazilian carriers—LATAM, Azul and now GOL—each pursuing distinct long-haul strategies, intensifying competition on fares and corporate-contract terms.
