Bureau of Meteorology Issues Multiple Volcanic-Ash SIGMETs Affecting Australian Airspace
The Bureau of Meteorology’s Darwin Volcanic Ash Advisory Centre released five Significant Meteorological (SIGMET) messages between 12:50 UTC and 17:24 UTC on 15 July, warning airlines of ash clouds from eruptions at Indonesia’s Semeru, Krakatau, Dukono, Ibu and Lewotobi volcanoes. Although the plumes currently lie north-west of Australian sovereign airspace, several intersect popular corridors linking Perth, Darwin and Brisbane with Singapore and Jakarta. Under international protocols, airlines must re-plan routes to avoid ash clouds because volcanic particles can melt onto turbine blades and cause dual-engine failure, as highlighted by the famous 1982 BA9 incident. Qantas, Virgin Australia and Singapore Airlines have begun filing contingency flight plans that add up to 20 minutes flying time on affected legs. Aviation data firm OAG estimates the diversions could cost carriers up to AU$250,000 in extra fuel and crew hours if warnings persist through the weekend. Cargo operators are particularly sensitive: lithium-battery exports from Perth and Adelaide to Asia often travel on passenger bellies, so any capacity squeeze could push shippers to higher-priced dedicated freighters. Travel-risk consultants Advito recommend corporates with critical same-day connections via Jakarta or Denpasar build overnight stop-overs into itineraries until the ash series subsides. The SIGMET series underscores how a cluster of moderate eruptions—even outside Australian territory—can ripple through business-travel schedules. The Darwin VAAC’s enhanced satellite-based detection network, upgraded earlier this year, now issues advisories up to 15 minutes faster than in 2025, giving dispatchers greater planning head-room. Nevertheless, mobility managers are urged to revisit crisis-response checklists, ensuring traveller tracking systems can push SMS alerts when new SIGMETs are published.
