The Swiss State Secretariat for Migration (SEM) has released its June 2026 statistics, showing a marked slowdown in asylum demand. Between January and June, SEM registered 9,734 applications—1,907 fewer than in the same period of 2025, a 16 % decline. June itself brought 1,777 new requests, 436 fewer than a year earlier. SEM analysts attribute the drop to lower boat arrivals in southern Italy and a sharp reduction in Turkish applicants, reflecting changing geopolitical and economic conditions along key migration routes. Afghanistan nevertheless remained the main country of origin (456 filings), followed by Eritrea, Algeria, Türkiye and Somalia. Roughly four out of ten cases processed in June resulted in refugee status. For Swiss employers, the data signals slightly reduced pressure on cantonal migration offices that issue work authorisations once asylum seekers receive protection. Less backlog should translate into faster decisions for companies hoping to hire refugees already in Switzerland. At the same time, the Federal Council is under renewed pressure from business lobbies to channel qualified asylum-status holders into shortage occupations, notably hospitality, health care and IT. The report also highlights stepped-up return efforts: 872 people left Switzerland in June, 527 voluntarily and 345 under escort. Border authorities stress that removals free accommodation places in the federal asylum centres but add to staffing demands at airports and land crossings. Logistics firms handling escorted returns must therefore factor in short-notice charter flights and weekend operations. Looking ahead, SEM warns that seasonal fluctuations—in particular a potential uptick across the central Mediterranean—could reverse the downward trend. Corporate mobility managers should therefore monitor monthly updates; if numbers rise sharply again, processing times for humanitarian residence permits and ancillary work approvals could lengthen.
