
The German Meteorological Service (DWD) issued fresh severe-weather alerts for Frankfurt, the wider Rhein-Main region and large parts of Hesse in the early hours of 18 July. Forecasters warned of a classic summer “Wetter-Achterbahn”: muggy heat followed by intense thunderstorms bringing torrential rain, hail up to three centimetres and gusts exceeding 100 km/h. While the worst cells are expected late Friday into Saturday, the agency cautioned that convective activity could redevelop on Sunday. Frankfurt Airport’s operations centre told media it was preparing for ground-handling slow-downs, temporary runway closures for lightning, and possible diversions to Cologne/Bonn and Munich. Lufthansa advised passengers to use its app and re-book at no charge if travelling this weekend. Rail traffic may also feel the impact. Deutsche Bahn’s ICE hub at Frankfurt Hbf lies directly beneath the forecast storm track; in past events, treefall on the high-speed line to Cologne and flooded underpasses on the Main-Weser route have triggered cascading delays nationwide. Commuter S-Bahn operator RMV has stockpiled ballast bags at known flash-flood hotspots and says replacement buses are on stand-by. For corporate mobility programmes the practical steps are clear: allow staff to change to earlier trains or flights, activate travel-risk alerts and ensure travellers have hotel authorisations in case of overnight stranding. Company car drivers should avoid underground car parks prone to flooding and park away from trees. HR departments with expatriates in the region should circulate the DWD’s warning link in English as many foreign residents do not use local weather apps. Looking further ahead, the Hessian Ministry of Transport said it is reviewing whether to bring forward the installation of additional permeable asphalt on the A3 near Frankfurt—a measure that could reduce surface run-off during increasingly frequent cloudbursts and protect a critical artery for both holiday traffic and daily logistics flows.
