Sydney Airport curfew works close main runway on selected nights, forcing airline schedule tweaks
Airservices Australia has advised airlines and the travelling public that Runway 16R/34L – Sydney Kingsford-Smith Airport’s main north-south runway – will be closed during the midnight-to-05:00 curfew on up to 12 nights between now and 30 September 2026. The latest NOTAM, published overnight on 19 July, confirms the next closure window will commence this Friday at 23:00, allowing contractors to replace ageing surface lighting and upgrade runway-end safety areas. Under Australia’s curfew legislation, only limited arrivals and departures are permitted at Sydney between 23:00 and 06:00. When the primary runway is unavailable, those exemptions shift to the parallel 16L/34R, which is closer to densely populated eastern suburbs. Qantas, Virgin Australia and several business-jet operators have already issued passenger advisories warning of potential late-night noise and minor schedule adjustments. For business travellers, the main impact is on ‘red-eye’ intra-state flights that position aircraft for early-morning departures. Corporate travel managers should verify connection times, especially for staff linking to charter flights from regional centres. Travellers with tight Monday-morning meetings are encouraged to fly in the previous evening to mitigate risk. The works highlight the long-term capacity constraints at Australia’s busiest airport and add impetus to the development of Western Sydney International, which will operate without a curfew. Airlines are expected to redistribute some late-night freight and charter movements to WSI once it opens, but until then contingency planning around Sydney’s maintenance windows remains essential.
