The timing is notable: South Australia’s agriculture and hospitality sectors have ramped up recruitment of Working-Holiday-Maker and Subclass 482 visa holders to cover peak-season labour shortages. Regulators say many small businesses remain unaware that visa holders cannot waive safety standards in exchange for piece rates or accommodation. Recent inspections found breaches ranging from inadequate induction to failure to provide personal protective equipment. For global-mobility managers, the update signals heightened enforcement risk. Multi-state employers must ensure their South Australian worksites align with the new guidance, as SafeWork SA inspectors can now issue on-the-spot infringement notices for documentation gaps—such as missing translated safety manuals. Employers who rely on labour-hire firms should verify that contractors brief migrant workers on their WHS rights in a language they understand.
