Procurement opens for Tiaro Bypass, promising faster Bruce Highway trips for freight and holiday traffic
Federal and Queensland ministers jointly announced on 22 July 2026 that procurement has begun for the AU$1.1 billion Tiaro Bypass, an 8.5-kilometre four-lane diversion that will remove a notorious pinch-point on the Bruce Highway north of Gympie. Once built, the grade-separated bypass will separate local from through traffic, slicing up to 10 minutes off the Brisbane-to-Rockhampton drive and improving flood resilience along the key freight and tourism corridor. The Bruce Highway carries significant road freight feeding the Port of Brisbane and supports road-based FIFO crew transfers to Central Queensland’s mining sector. The project has been fast-tracked with additional Commonwealth funding allocated in the 2026-27 Budget. Market sounding for main works is now under way, with construction timetables to be confirmed after a head contractor is appointed in early 2027. The bypass is expected to open by 2030. For corporate mobility programs, the upgrade will mean more reliable ground-transport options between South-East Queensland and the state’s regional growth centres, potentially reducing the need for short-haul connecting flights. Logistics providers anticipate productivity gains worth AU$40 million a year from shorter travel times and reduced vehicle damage during flood events. Travellers should, however, plan for intermittent lane closures during the three-year build phase from late 2027. Companies operating shuttle services for Fly-in Fly-out staff may need to adjust schedules once work starts.
