Whyalla Airport Runway Upgrade Completed, Securing Regional Connectivity
The AUD 32 million upgrade of Whyalla Airport’s runway and lighting system has been completed, allowing QantasLink’s larger 74-seat Q400 turboprops to begin operating the route to Adelaide later this year. The project was jointly funded by the Australian (AUD 16.2 m) and South Australian (AUD 13.8 m) governments, with Whyalla City Council contributing AUD 2.4 m.

For travellers keen to make the most of the enhanced services, VisaHQ offers a quick, fully online way to secure the appropriate Australian travel visas and electronic travel authorities. Its platform (https://www.visahq.com/australia/) guides users step-by-step through the requirements, so both domestic FIFO workers and overseas visitors can breeze through the paperwork and focus on enjoying the faster connections.

Engineers strengthened the pavement to accommodate heavier aircraft and replaced 30-year-old lighting with energy-efficient LEDs. More than 90 percent of construction materials were sourced locally and 110 of the 234-strong workforce were Whyalla residents, injecting an estimated AUD 4 million into the regional economy during the build. For businesses that rely on fly-in-fly-out (FIFO) workers to service the nearby steel plant and emerging hydrogen projects, the upgrade safeguards a vital transport link. The state government recently declared Whyalla a Special Economic Zone and views reliable air access as critical to attracting skilled labour and investors. With passenger numbers already exceeding 50,000 per year, QantasLink says the faster Q400s will cut sector times and add capacity ahead of a forecast tourism uptick when the city’s new maritime-science centre opens in 2027.
