Orange and SFR add direct ‘Travel Advice’ link to roaming welcome SMS
France’s two largest mobile operators have quietly upgraded their roaming welcome messages to include a direct hyperlink to the foreign-ministry’s "Conseils aux voyageurs" (travel advice) portal. The change, announced on 23 July by junior foreign-affairs minister Éléonore Caroit, follows a pilot project that showed a 40 % jump in traveller registrations on the government’s Ariane crisis-alert platform. From this week, subscribers who switch on their phones abroad receive the usual tariff notification plus the new link. Clicking opens country-specific safety advice and lets users register their trip so French consulates can locate them during emergencies. The feature also appears automatically when customers buy an international "Pass Voyage" add-on. The reform matters for global-mobility teams because it simplifies duty-of-care compliance. Companies can instruct staff to click the link rather than fill out separate risk-assessment forms, ensuring that consular authorities have up-to-date itineraries. Insurance providers, who often require evidence of government-alert registration, have welcomed the move. Orange and SFR account for more than 50 million SIM cards; Bouygues and Free have been invited to join the scheme later this year. The foreign ministry says it hopes to extend the model to eSIM profiles used by corporate travel-management companies, further automating crisis communication. The initiative costs operators little but could significantly improve the speed at which French nationals receive evacuation or security instructions—an increasingly salient issue as extreme weather and geopolitical flashpoints disrupt travel plans worldwide.
