EAFO Data Flash: France Posts 92 % Surge in EV Registrations as EU Alternative-Fuels Dashboard Updates
The European Alternative Fuels Observatory (EAFO) released its July data flash on 22 July 2026, offering the first consolidated picture of Europe’s electric-mobility market to the end of June. France stands out among the 13 reporting member states with a 92.1 % year-on-year jump in battery-electric-vehicle (BEV) registrations, reaching 55,851 units and overtaking Germany on growth momentum. Across the sample, BEVs captured 25.3 % of new-car sales while public charging points rose 18 % to 1.17 million. For corporates running French car fleets or mobility budgets, the numbers show that government incentives – including the 2026 “bonus vert” extension and stricter low-emission-zone rules – are translating into real uptake. Fleet managers that postpone electrification risk being locked out of urban centres such as Paris, Lyon and Grenoble where diesel bans tighten from 2027. The EAFO portal now offers granular French sub-national dashboards allowing relocation teams to factor charging density into housing and schooling searches for inbound assignees. Regions with the fastest charger rollout (Île-de-France, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes and Nouvelle-Aquitaine) correlate with major expatriate hubs, easing concerns about ‘range anxiety’ for company-car drivers. The Commission confirmed that the next dataset – covering July figures and infrastructure updates – will be published on 15 August. Mobility policy watchers expect the forthcoming Alternative-Fuels Infrastructure Regulation (AFIR) national implementation plans, due in October, to drive another spike in installations ahead of the 2027 UEFA Championships hosted partly in France. Global-mobility programmes should therefore revisit car-policy grids, TCO calculations and eco-allowances before the 2027 budget cycle, taking into account the EAFO’s fresh cost-of-ownership calculator and planned grants for home chargers available to foreign residents holding a French tax number.
