Italy reinstates Schengen border controls for Alpine festival, impacting UK motorists
The European Commission’s Schengen update of 24 July confirms that Italy has temporarily reintroduced checks on its land frontier with France from 24 to 26 July, citing security risks linked to the Festival dell’Alta Felicità in Venaus. Although the measure is short-lived, it revives full passport inspection for all travellers—including UK nationals—on the key Fréjus and Mont Blanc tunnel routes. Motor clubs estimate that more than 7,000 British vehicles will attempt to cross between France and Italy this weekend as families head to Tuscan villas and corporate travellers begin the Monday business week in Milan. Coaches chartered for the Farnborough-based Farnell Electronics sales conference in Turin have already been advised to allow an extra 90 minutes for border formalities. Under Article 25 of the Schengen Borders Code, member states may suspend free movement for up to 30 days where serious public-order threats exist. Italy’s Interior Ministry says intelligence pointed to possible protests against the controversial Turin–Lyon high-speed rail line near the festival site. Similar short reintroductions occurred during the G7 Bari summit in 2024 and led to 12-km tailbacks. Businesses moving temperature-sensitive freight should note that French customs will prioritise live-animal and medical loads; general freight may face staggered convoy release. For passenger vehicles, passports must be stamped, which will feed data into the EU Entry/Exit System and count towards the 90/180-day limit—meaning UK motorists who had relied on “soft stamping” should recalculate their Schengen allowance. While the immediate impact eases after Monday, the episode is a reminder that spontaneous Schengen suspensions are becoming more frequent. Mobility teams organising cross-border road travel within Europe should monitor the Commission’s notification portal daily and build routing flexibility into assignment schedules.
