Border Security Command officers were confronted with the largest single small-boat arrival on record on 23 July when a 13-metre inflatable packed with 165 people was towed into Dover. The vessel – quickly dubbed a “mega dinghy” – smashed the previous record of 128 occupants and highlights the escalating risks smugglers are willing to take in the English Channel. Charity Care4Calais said the incident showed that a deterrence-only strategy has pushed smugglers to load ever greater numbers onto increasingly unseaworthy craft. Government figures released the same day confirmed 366 people arrived in three boats, bringing the 2026 total to 13,007 – 45 % lower than last year but still a major political flash-point. For employers the continued crossings mean tighter right-to-work checks and a likely uptick in Home Office compliance visits, as the government tries to show it is cracking down on illegal employment. Logistics firms around Dover are also bracing for sporadic traffic restrictions when large groups are processed at the harbour, something that has previously disrupted freight flows. The new Labour government insists its recently signed deal with France – which increases beach patrols and expands surveillance drones – will “drive the gangs out of business”. Critics point out that similar agreements since 2020 have not stemmed demand and are urging ministers to expand safe humanitarian and skills-based routes instead.
