Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has confirmed that Minister Lena Metlege Diab will announce the national roll-out of online passport renewals at a press conference in Vancouver at 10:00 a.m. Pacific on July 28. Canada has been piloting an online channel for simplified adult renewals since late 2024, processing more than 91,000 passports to date through a limited daily quota. The coming expansion will allow most Canadians with passports that expired within the last 15 years to complete renewal fully online, including remote identity verification, digital photo upload and e-payment. The online option is expected to shorten processing times and reduce foot traffic at Service Canada centres—a significant gain for frequent flyers and corporate travel planners who currently face unpredictable in-person queues. IRCC’s Service Standard now offers a “30 days or free” guarantee, meaning travellers who apply online should either receive their passport within 30 business days or automatically get their application fee refunded. Employers should update travel-document checklists: the new system does not require the guarantor signatures or original proofs of citizenship demanded under paper renewal. However, employees whose passports expire in more than six months remain ineligible for online renewal and must still use traditional channels. Companies with large mobile workforces may want to run proactive audits to flag employees who could benefit from the simpler process.
