SWISS to Resume Zurich–Tel Aviv Route on 1 August After Nine-Month Suspension

Swiss International Air Lines (SWISS) will restart daily passenger services between Zurich and Tel Aviv’s Ben-Gurion Airport on 1 August 2026, ending a nine-month hiatus triggered by the regional security crisis that escalated last autumn. The Lufthansa-Group carrier initially halted flights in mid-November 2025 when Israeli-U.S. strikes on Iranian targets prompted missile exchanges that briefly closed Israeli airspace and drove insurance premiums for airlines operating to the country dramatically higher. While parent company Lufthansa resumed a reduced Frankfurt–Tel Aviv schedule in June, SWISS continued its pause, citing the additional operational complexity of using Zurich as a hub for long-haul connections. According to the airline, a joint security assessment with the Swiss Federal Office of Civil Aviation (FOCA) and Israel’s Civil Aviation Authority concluded that risks to commercial traffic have fallen to a “manageable” level thanks to improved missile-defence coverage around central Israel and new diversion procedures agreed with air-traffic control. All SWISS crews operating the route will overnight in Larnaca, Cyprus, and position into Tel Aviv on the day of departure until further notice—a measure designed to limit crew exposure while still offering business-friendly morning departures from Zurich. The restored service is strategically important for Swiss multinationals in the life-sciences, fintech and cybersecurity sectors that maintain R&D sites in the Tel Aviv metropolitan area. Before the suspension, Switzerland–Israel traffic exceeded 320,000 passengers annually, 60 % of whom travelled on corporate tickets.
