Diplomats in Brussels say an emergency COREPER meeting may be convened early next week, but stress that any formal suspension of Schengen cooperation would face high legal hurdles. The episode underlines the political volatility that large-scale irregular arrivals can unleash inside the EU and the reputational stakes for governments seen as either too soft or too harsh. For mobility professionals, the larger risk is policy whiplash: sudden gestures by one member state can trigger retaliatory steps by others, creating a patchwork of rules that complicate even routine business trips.
