According to participants, Berlin backed a ‘graduated toolbox’ that would allow frontline states to request rapid-reaction Frontex teams and emergency relocation of asylum-seekers, but resisted proposals from Austria and Hungary to trigger an immediate suspension of visa-free travel for Moroccan nationals. Faeser argued that blanket restrictions would hit business travellers and seasonal workers needed by German industry, and urged instead that Morocco be pressed—through trade leverage—to take back nationals with rejected claims. The discussion also touched on operational bottlenecks at German airports following April’s launch of the EU Entry/Exit System (EES). Faeser conceded that Frankfurt and Munich are already seeing longer queues and warned colleagues that a return to systematic land-border checks—such as those Germany still runs with Poland and Czechia—would create “a domino of delays” at air and rail hubs. In a joint statement issued after the call, ministers pledged to present by October a contingency plan combining faster asylum screening, stepped-up returns, and better coordination with North African partners. For German multinationals that rotate staff through Spain and Morocco, the outcome means journeys will continue with minimal new paperwork for now, but companies are advised to monitor the promised October package, which could alter short-stay visa rules or carrier-liability regimes. Practically, mobility managers should brief travelling staff on potential spot-checks at Schengen internal borders this summer and build in extra connection time at Frankfurt and Munich until border-guard staffing catches up with EES volumes.
