Roma Termini Track Works Divert Long-Distance Trains Until 19 September
Trenitalia has issued an operational bulletin advising that planned engineering works at Roma Termini—the hub for Italy’s north-south high-speed axis—will run from 14 to 19 September 2026. The track-renewal programme affects the Naples–Rome–Milan/Venice and Turin–Salerno–Reggio Calabria corridors. Selected Frecciarossa, Intercity Notte and Eurocity services will originate or terminate at Roma Tiburtina instead of Termini, while some south-bound trains will bypass the capital entirely using the Orte freight bypass. For business travellers, the biggest impact is extended connection time between HS rail and flights at Fiumicino: the dedicated Leonardo Express runs only from Termini. Trenitalia recommends adding at least 30 minutes if a change of station via metro Line B or taxi is required. Holders of “Executive” or “Business Salottino” tickets arriving at Tiburtina will be granted complimentary lounge access normally reserved for Termini. Cargo operators using the Mercitalia Fast night-freight service have also been warned; temperature-controlled Pharmatrain departures will load at Pomezia shunting yard, 20 km south of the city, to keep within delivery windows for central-Italy hospital pharmacies. The maintenance is part of RFI’s €14 billion “Linea Sicura” upgrade programme, accelerating ahead of the 2028 Jubilee year. By forging ahead with concentrated five-day blocks rather than weekend closures, RFI says it can deliver new track-switches and signalling sooner—but at the cost of short-term timetable upheaval. Travellers holding tickets on affected trains can reroute or refund without penalty within the validity period. Mobility managers should check PNRs issued before 11 September and re-issue e-tickets where train numbers have changed to avoid seating conflicts at ticket inspection.
