The Inter-departmental Directorate of Roads North (DIR Nord) announced on 21 September that resurfacing and maintenance works will reduce the A16 motorway to a single lane in both directions between Calais and Coquelles from 20 to 25 September 2026. Crucially for cross-Channel mobility, entry and exit ramps serving Eurotunnel’s tourist terminal (junction 42) will be closed toward Dunkirk, alongside the Coquelles on-ramp toward Boulogne. Passenger cars, coaches and freight shuttles will be diverted to junction 40 (Peuplingues) or junction 43 (Calais-Centre) before doubling back—an extra 12–18 kilometres that could add 20 minutes in peak traffic. Eurotunnel estimates that up to 12 000 vehicles a day use the tourism terminal during late-September getaway weekends; operators have warned customers to allow additional time for border checks and juxtaposed UK-France passport control. Although the works fall outside the summer holiday rush, they coincide with Eurostar and SNCF engineering windows, raising the risk of compound delays across Channel routes. Logisticians moving temperature-sensitive pharmaceuticals and just-in-time automotive components may need to shift departure slots or switch to ferry services at Dunkirk and Dover. DIR Nord says night-time closures were considered but rejected because asphalt temperatures would not meet technical standards after sunset. The agency has, however, scheduled the most disruptive milling operations between 22:00 and 06:00 to lessen daytime noise. For travel-risk managers and corporate mobility teams, the headline message is to brief drivers on detour signage and to monitor real-time traffic feeds (Bison Futé, Waze, Eurotunnel alerts). Employees catching Monday-morning shuttles should aim for earlier departures, and per-diem policies may need adjusting to reflect longer duty hours.
