Austrian Airlines (AUA) will keep its summer network alive well into the Austrian school-holiday week at the end of October, laying on an additional 100 flights to popular sunshine destinations. The carrier confirmed the capacity boost in a statement on 24 September, saying demand for late-season leisure travel remains strong enough to warrant extending services that would normally end when the winter timetable begins on 24/25 October. The biggest beneficiaries are Spain and the Mediterranean. Ibiza, Alicante, Bilbao and Fuerteventura stay on the map longer, while frequency increases are scheduled for Palma de Mallorca (11 extra services) and Larnaca (13). Italian beach and city destinations – Olbia, Palermo, Lamezia Terme, Rome, Florence and Naples – also gain extra rotations, as do Split, Dubrovnik, Nice and Valencia. Corporate travel managers should note that the extra flights are timed for the so-called “Herbstferien” (26 October is a public holiday), traditionally a peak week for family and conference travel. By inserting capacity rather than up-gauging aircraft, AUA can maintain schedule flexibility and avoid slot coordination issues at Vienna and at constrained Mediterranean airports. The move also protects regional connectivity, as Vienna acts as a hub feeding passengers from neighbouring CEE markets onto these leisure routes. Looking further ahead, the airline said its new winter programme will pivot toward long-haul resorts once the summer extension ends. Frequencies to Malé and Mauritius rise to seven per week (and up to ten to the Maldives during the February semester break); a “double-daily” Bangkok returns; and a new Boeing 787-9 will debut on Vienna–Mauritius from mid-January. These adjustments suggest that AUA expects both holidaymakers and corporate incentive groups to keep spending despite macro-economic headwinds. For mobility planners, the key takeaway is that autumn capacity to the Mediterranean will be more plentiful than usual, reducing the risk of price spikes or last-minute sell-outs and giving expatriate staff more options to combine business trips with leisure extensions.
