Italian rail strike on 2 October to disrupt Ticino–Lombardy commuter services, warns TILO

Regional operator TILO has issued a travel alert for cross-border commuters after Italian trade unions confirmed a 24-hour national rail strike for Friday 2 October. In a notice dated 29 September, the Swiss-Italian joint venture said services on all its lines south of the border – including the key RE80 (Locarno–Lugano–Milan) and S10 (Biasca–Lugano–Como) – could be reduced or cancelled. Trains operating solely on Swiss territory will run to schedule. The timing is awkward: the strike falls just before a major trade-fair weekend in Milan and during the autumn holiday change-over in Canton Ticino. About 15,000 daily commuters and weekend travellers rely on TILO trains to reach Lombardy, and capacity on replacement buses is limited. Trenord, TILO’s Italian partner, will publish a minimum-service timetable 48 hours before the action, but experience from previous strikes suggests Swiss passengers should expect residual delays well into Saturday morning. Businesses in the Mendrisio–Varese industrial belt are already advising staff to work from home or shift rosters. Ticino hotels fear late cancellations from Italian guests. For Swiss residents holding GA or point-to-point tickets, unused cross-border segments will be refunded under SBB’s “disruption guarantee”, provided requests are filed within 30 days. The episode highlights the vulnerability of the North-South rail axis just as policymakers push commuters out of cars to meet climate goals. TILO is lobbying Bern and Rome to classify certain cross-border routes as “essential public service”, which would impose stricter minimum-service obligations even during strikes. Until then, employers should monitor updates on TILO’s website and advise staff to download the Trenord app for last-minute platform changes. If the walk-out proceeds, it will be the third national strike to hit the corridor this year and the first since the EU Entry/Exit System went live, raising the prospect of longer immigration queues at Milan’s Porta Garibaldi and Centrale stations when trains do run.
