The operator of the Guangzhou–Shenzhen–Hong Kong High Speed Rail announced on 1 October that, from now until 8 October, an extra pair of sleeper trains between West Kowloon and Beijing West will operate every Tuesday to Thursday, giving passengers daily overnight options in both directions. In a separate notice, the operator confirmed that Taishan Station in western Guangdong will be added to the Hong Kong timetable on 11 October, raising the direct-destination count to 114. The additional capacity is designed to cope with National Day demand, but corporate mobility managers see longer-term benefits. “Sleeper services effectively turn Beijing into an overnight commuting city for Hong Kong executives,” said May Cheng, APAC head of travel at a global law firm. Firms that mandate premium-economy air for flights under four hours may switch to rail berths, which cost about 40 per cent less and avoid early-morning airport transfers. To streamline booking, travellers can now register mainland travel permits in the China Railway 12306 mobile app without visiting a ticket window—a process previously limited to Chinese ID holders. Foreign nationals with Hong Kong permanent residence can also enrol, widening self-service options for expatriates. Immigration checkpoints at West Kowloon have reprogrammed e-Channel gates to recognise the new electronic ticket QR codes, cutting document checks by up to eight seconds per passenger. However, officials caution that paper tickets remain mandatory for company-sponsored staff travelling on cost-centres that require physical receipts. Employers planning regional roadshows are advised to book group quotas early; the operator said corporate allocations would close 15 days before departure during peak seasons.
