San Tin–Huanggang spur of Northern Link gets green light, promising 11-minute border hop
Hong Kong’s Transport Department has approved construction of the Northern Link spur line that will connect San Tin in the New Territories directly to Shenzhen’s Huanggang Port, according to local media reports on 19 September. The 10 km railway will allow passengers to clear both Mainland and Hong Kong immigration in a single facility and reach central Shenzhen in 11 minutes once it opens—target date 2034. The spur forms part of the larger Northern Metropolis development blueprint and complements existing East Rail and High-Speed Rail services. Planners say the link will feature high-capacity trains running at six-minute intervals during peak hours, capable of moving 180 000 passengers daily. A multi-storey park-and-ride complex is also slated for San Tin to attract cross-boundary commuters driving from western New Territories. For employers the project could dramatically widen talent catchment areas on both sides of the border. Recruitment consultants predict that Shenzhen-based tech firms will tap bilingual Hong Kong graduates for hybrid work, while Hong Kong financial institutions gain easier access to clients in Qianhai. Real-estate analysts already expect a 5–8 % uplift in residential prices around San Tin North once ground breaks in late 2027. Until the line is delivered, mobility managers must still juggle coach, MTR and High-Speed Rail options for cross-border staff. But the approval signals Beijing and Hong Kong’s commitment to seamless GBA mobility—useful context when structuring long-term assignment packages or site-selection plans.
