A real-time status check of Switzerland’s 77 alpine pass roads shows the first winter-style disruptions of the season, with the iconic Gotthard Pass closed to all traffic from 18:00 on 8 October until 08:00 on 9 October. The snapshot, published at 07:42 CEST on 9 October, also confirms that the Furka and Susten passes remain under overnight safety closures and that the Nufenen is shut indefinitely. Although most major trans-alpine freight uses the Gotthard road tunnel or rail base tunnel, the panoramic pass road is popular with corporate incentive groups and high-end tourists driving between Zurich and Milan. The eight-hour closure forced detours via the Simplon or San Bernardino passes and added up to 90 minutes to travel times. Cantonal authorities in Uri have announced additional night-time blocks on the Klausen Pass on 9–10 October and 13–14 October to dismantle construction cranes and lay fresh tarmac. Companies moving sensitive equipment or staging product launches in mountain resorts should therefore include weather-contingency clauses in their logistics plans. TCS (Touring Club Schweiz) recommends that drivers carry winter tyres and chains from early October, even though permanent seasonal closures usually begin in November. Supply-chain managers running “milk-run” deliveries over multiple passes are advised to check the TCS portal at 06:00 each morning and to brief drivers on alternative routings via lower-altitude tunnels. The early closures are a reminder that Switzerland’s alpine infrastructure remains vulnerable to sudden snowfalls and overnight ice. Mobility professionals planning VIP itineraries or time-critical cross-border drives should build in at least one pass-free backup route during the shoulder season.
