Sabotage fire halts Lausanne–Yverdon line, reroutes national traffic for the weekend
Swiss rail passengers awoke on 9 October to major disruptions after a pre-dawn fire destroyed signalling cables near Éclépens on the strategic Lausanne–Yverdon-les-Bains corridor. Police investigators say evidence points to deliberate sabotage. The damaged cables control both long-distance InterCity services linking western Switzerland with Zurich and Basel and regional RER Vaud trains that feed commuter flows into Lausanne and Geneva. The Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) immediately closed the 25-kilometre stretch between Cossonay-Penthalaz and Chavornay, deploying around 20 replacement buses and 40 passenger stewards while 100 technicians worked to re-wire the control system. Long-distance travellers between Geneva/Lausanne and the German-speaking cantons were advised to detour via Bern, adding up to an hour to journey times and crowding alternative routes. Freight operators were also forced to reroute, highlighting the corridor’s importance for time-sensitive trans-Alpine supply chains. SBB expects the line to remain closed until early Sunday, 11 October, coinciding with scheduled engineering works that were already set to reduce capacity. Mobility managers for multinational firms in the Lake Geneva region issued urgent guidance to visiting executives and cross-border commuters, rerouting company shuttles to Bern and encouraging virtual meetings. Travel insurers confirmed that tickets rebooked because of the incident will be covered under force-majeure provisions. The incident has reignited debate about the vulnerability of Switzerland’s busiest west-east axis. Canton ministers from Vaud and Geneva, writing separately in Le Temps, called for accelerated federal investment in the "Transports’45" rail plan to add redundancy. Security services, meanwhile, have raised surveillance around critical rail nodes, and SBB has filed a criminal complaint against unknown perpetrators. Companies reliant on just-in-time deliveries are being urged to review contingency logistics and employee communication channels before Monday’s commute.
