India’s services exporters have gained a coveted new market as the India–New Zealand Free Trade Agreement (FTA) took effect at 00:01 IST on 20 October. The pact creates a dedicated temporary-entry pathway allowing up to 5,000 Indian nationals to live and work in New Zealand for up to three years at any one time. Covered occupations span IT, engineering, construction, healthcare and education, and even cultural niches such as yoga instructors and classical-music teachers. Separate streams facilitate intra-company transferees (three-year stays), contractual service suppliers (12 months) and short-term business visitors and equipment installers (90 days in a 12-month window). Unlike Australia’s MATES scheme—which uses an annual ballot—the New Zealand quota is “rolling”, meaning new slots open as earlier visa-holders depart. Employers must still meet local labour-market tests and minimum-salary thresholds pegged to 120 per cent of New Zealand’s median wage. Trade officials say the agreement could triple bilateral services trade to NZ$7 billion by 2030. For Indian IT firms already present in Auckland and Wellington, the pathway offers a cost-effective alternative to more crowded markets such as Canada and the UK. Smaller consultancies specialising in cybersecurity and fintech are expected to be early applicants. Practical next steps: Indian companies should align New Zealand projects with the quota calendar, prepare robust skill-match evidence, and advise assignees on high living costs and limited rental stock in major Kiwi cities. Early engagement with New Zealand Immigration will be key, as processing targets are 21 calendar days for “straightforward” applications.
