In a move long requested by corporate immigration practitioners, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) on April 23, 2026 enabled online submission of Form I-485, Application to Register Permanent Residence or Adjust Status, for selected employment-based categories. Until now, adjustment applicants—even those who filed their immigrant-petition (I-140) online—had to mail thick paper packets to a lockbox facility, extending processing times and complicating oversight of globally mobile employees. Under the pilot, eligible applicants log into a myUSCIS account, answer dynamic questions, upload PDFs of supporting evidence, and pay fees electronically. USCIS will issue digital receipt notices and push biometric-appointment alerts directly to the account dashboard. The agency says the rollout will expand in phases, but for now excludes family-based, asylum-related, and diversity-lottery cases. For multinationals, the change promises shorter work-authorization gaps. Adjustment applicants may apply for advance parole and an Employment Authorization Document (EAD) as soon as the I-485 is receipted; a same-day digital receipt could compress the queue by two weeks. HR mobility teams also gain real-time visibility: attorneys can grant read-only access to corporate program managers who need to track green-card milestones for talent-planning or SOX compliance. Risks remain. Practitioners report intermittent outages when uploading large PDF bundles and caution that the system lacks edit capability once an application is submitted. Erroneous data cannot be corrected without withdrawing and refiling, which could reset priority-date eligibility if visa numbers retrogress. Companies should therefore pilot the platform with low-risk cases and maintain parallel paper backups until USCIS issues further technical guidance. Nevertheless, the shift signals a broader digital transformation at USCIS. With H-1B registration already fully electronic and premium-processing upgrades available online, Form I-485 was the last major employment form trapped in paper. Stakeholders expect the agency to add corporate bulk-upload features next, paving the way for truly end-to-end digital case management.
