DETE updates employment-permit processing dates, urges companies to file renewals early
The Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment quietly refreshed its online dashboard on 3 July 2026, revealing that Critical Skills Employment Permits filed on 11 June are now being examined, while General Employment Permits lodged after 15 May remain in queue. Renewal applications across all permit types are still at 19 March, and review/appeal files are backlogged to mid-December 2025. Although the headline numbers show only modest movement since the June update, immigration advisers say the snapshot masks growing divergence: tech-sector Critical Skills cases are moving in three weeks thanks to DETE’s AI document-triage pilot, but hospitality General Permits can take up to 10 weeks because of high summer demand.

Businesses struggling to keep pace with these shifting processing times can lean on VisaHQ’s dedicated Ireland service desk, which pre-qualifies applicants, assembles compliant documentation packs and submits them electronically for faster triage; full details and live chat support are available at

Employers that rely on seasonal chefs or front-of-house staff are therefore urged to submit applications at least three months before the intended start date. The update coincides with DETE’s consultation on raising salary thresholds for all permit categories from 1 March 2027, a change flagged in last year’s Roadmap on Economic Migration. Organisations considering multi-year postings should factor possible salary inflation into assignment costings and, where feasible, lodge permits before the threshold climbs. Mobility managers welcomed DETE’s decision to include renewal data for Intra-Company Transfers (ICTs) separately; the 19 March cut-off suggests that companies need to begin renewals 16–18 weeks before expiry to avoid forced work stoppages. HR teams should also cross-check permit expiry with Department of Justice residence permissions (IRP cards) to ensure synchronised renewals. In practical terms, the new processing dates mean that an ICT renewal submitted today is unlikely to be approved before late October. Employers can mitigate risk by asking DETE for an acknowledgement letter confirming the application is in process; most banks and landlords accept this as temporary evidence of the right to remain.
