Visa-free boom: Shanghai handles 2 million visa-exempt arrivals in H1 2026
Shanghai’s border inspection authorities have released half-year data that underline how quickly China’s post-pandemic visa liberalisation is translating into real traffic. According to figures made public on 6 July, the metropolis processed 3.17 million inbound foreign visitor arrivals between January and June—up 22 percent year-on-year. Crucially, 2.05 million of those entries (more than 60 percent) were made under the 30-day unilateral visa-free scheme or the expanded 240-hour (10-day) transit-without-visa programme.

Local officials attribute the surge to two parallel dynamics. First, China has progressively added major source markets—most recently the UK and Canada—to the list of countries eligible for 30-day visa-free stays, giving tour operators and meeting planners a predictable entry regime. Second, Shanghai has bundled culture, commerce, sport and conventions into integrated itineraries that meet the ’business plus leisure’ expectations of modern travellers. Corporate delegates attending June’s World Artificial Intelligence Conference, for example, could move straight from Pudong Airport to the venue without a visa, then tack on weekend sightseeing before transiting to a third country within ten days.

Whether visitors qualify for the visa-free entry, need a standard tourist visa, or simply want to double-check their eligibility for the 240-hour transit arrangement, VisaHQ’s online portal can streamline the process. Its China section keeps an up-to-date matrix of nationalities, required documents and police-registration rules, and also offers courier submission for those who still need a traditional sticker visa—handy for travel managers coordinating mixed-origin teams.

Infrastructure has also been upgraded. Border officers reported that 744,000 cruise passengers were processed during the period, helped by the launch of China’s first “destination-free” cruise route on 6 June. Pre-departure inspections, e-gates and advance passenger classification have cut vessel turnaround times and reduced crew overtime costs. Meanwhile, 22,000 commercial ships—an average of 120 per day—called at Shanghai’s ports, and 25,000 seafarers were rotated using streamlined shore-leave formalities, easing supply-chain pressure on shipping lines.

For mobility managers the message is clear: Shanghai is regaining its status as China’s primary gateway for short-term business activity. Travellers from any of the 79 visa-exempt countries can schedule meetings of up to 30 days without additional paperwork, while others can exploit the 240-hour transit rule provided they hold onward tickets. Companies should still remind staff that the visa-free stay cannot be extended in-country and that registration with local police within 24 hours remains mandatory.

Looking ahead, city officials hinted that Pudong Airport will open more dedicated fast-track lanes for APEC Business Travel Card holders before the National Day holiday, and that facial-recognition boarding will be piloted on selected China Eastern flights to further compress connection times.
