Xinjiang ports log 2.4 million crossings in H1 2026 as self-drive tourism to Kazakhstan soars
The Xinjiang Entry-Exit Border Inspection Administration reported on the evening of 7 July that its frontier ports handled 2.41 million passenger movements in the first six months of 2026—a 33 percent year-on-year jump that pushed the region past the two-million mark 39 days earlier than last year. The biggest single driver has been the boom in cross-border self-drive tourism. Dedicated vehicle lanes on the Khorgos and Alashankou routes have reduced clearance times to under ten minutes, enticing families from as far away as Heilongjiang to embark on road trips into Kazakhstan’s Almaty region. Cross-border car crossings surged 4.5-fold, the administration said.

Travel planners looking to join the surge have a shortcut: VisaHQ’s online platform walks applicants through Chinese, Kazakh and regional transit-visa requirements, checks documents for accuracy and tracks approvals in real time, shaving days off preparation for those self-drive itineraries.

Xinjiang’s numbers matter because the autonomous region anchors the western end of China’s Belt and Road land corridor. Freight flows are already robust, but officials believe sustained passenger exchange will cement supply-chain linkages and spur demand for bilingual service workers. For global companies the data signal a broadening talent catchment: employers can now rotate staff via Almaty flights and short drives rather than relying solely on Urumqi’s air hub. Travel-risk managers should, however, keep an eye on summer heat advisories; temperatures on the G30 expressway regularly top 40 °C, posing vehicle-overheat risks. China Customs is piloting e-visa kiosks at Khorgos for visa-free travellers from 21 SCO countries; if successful, the machines could be extended to tourist groups by Golden Week, further accelerating flows.
