Gordie Howe International Bridge to open 27 July, promising faster Detroit–Windsor crossings
After years of construction and diplomatic haggling, U.S. and Canadian officials have agreed to open the six-lane Gordie Howe International Bridge on 27 July. The 1.5-mile span will add a second high-capacity link between Detroit, Michigan, and Windsor, Ontario, complementing the Ambassador Bridge and relieving one of North America’s busiest commercial corridors. The $4.5 billion public-private partnership includes a new U.S. Port of Entry with 28 primary inspection booths and dedicated FAST/NEXUS lanes. Customs officers estimate the facility will handle 10,000 trucks a day at peak, cutting idling times by up to 30 percent compared with current choke-points. For multinational manufacturers the timing is critical: automakers rely on just-in-time shipments that cross the border an average of seven times before a vehicle rolls off the line. Logistics managers are already re-routing freight contracts to take advantage of the new span, which offers a direct connection to I-75 on the U.S. side and Highway 401 in Canada. The bridge’s opening also expands commuter options for knowledge workers who live on one side of the border and work on the other. HR teams should review corporate relocation policies to include toll reimbursements and ensure that cross-border staff hold valid work authorization—TN, L-1 or intracompany NEXUS passes—as inspection volumes shift. Travel advice: register trucks in the ACE e-Manifest system well ahead of launch; encourage employees to obtain RFID-enabled documents (passport cards, enhanced driver’s licences); and plan for soft-opening traffic simulations scheduled 24–25 July, when partial lane closures could cause brief delays.
