A joint task force of Brazil’s Federal Police (PF) and the Paraná State Military Police intercepted a boat carrying 431 kilograms of pressed cannabis on the Paraná River near Foz do Iguaçu in the early hours of 22 July 2026. Three Paraguayan nationals were arrested on charges of international drug trafficking after officers tracked the vessel’s night-time crossing from the Paraguayan bank. The bust underscores the persistent challenge facing Brazilian border authorities despite periodic large-scale operations such as Ágata. According to PF statistics, more than 25 tonnes of marijuana have been seized in the tri-border area since January 2026, a 12 percent year-on-year increase attributed to drought-lower river levels that make clandestine crossings easier. From a global mobility perspective, heightened enforcement translates into stricter inspections of private vehicles and buses leaving Ciudad del Este and entering Foz do Iguaçu. Business travellers should expect longer processing times at the Friendship Bridge, and relocation specialists handling household-goods shipments through the Paraná corridor may face additional scanning requirements. The case will be handled by the Federal Justice in Foz do Iguaçu, but legal experts note that bilateral police cooperation with Paraguay has improved since the 2025 signing of a new mutual-assistance treaty. The PF says intelligence gleaned from the arrests will feed into forthcoming risk-profiling algorithms used at land-border e-gates scheduled for rollout in 2027.
